No sportsman relishing a victory
against his foe in an athletic meet
would dish up such a large trajectory
of reportage. Yet she did who’d repeat
that some infatuated patron set
his heart upon her gender-bending role
in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Forget her flaunting feminine control
as Romeo’s ill-fated paramour -
that followed later when she donned a dress.
It was her rapier wielding overture
as Gregory that managed to impress
her fan, who having praised her cocksure guise
would serve as trophy that she’d advertise.
I was born & bred in New Jersey, I worked for many years in New York City. I love music from Bach to Shakira to Amy Winehouse. I also attend a Café Philo in Lower Manhattan every other week, and a poetry workshop which are now, since Corona, ZOOM events.
