Bean and Ham Soup by Lynette G. Esposito

I sat at the kitchen counter
of my dad’s gas
station
while he cooked
lima bean and ham soup.
I hated it.

What makes a poor child
so arrogant she could hate
her own dad’s soup
then sit and eat as if
it were chocolate
because he made it for her.
