The Holiday Kitchen by Lynette Esposito

Cauldron smoke rises
like gray ghosts dancing —
Translucent gossamer beings
seeking escape from the boil.
Twisted fingers
torture them into the air–
higher and higher
until first one, then all
disappear.
Out of the black more come,
souls flying like eyeless insects, grotesque
but free
because of the Christmas soup.
