Megachilidae – Estée Arts Crenshaw

As it chews
through
the nursery
loaves,
hatching brood
tunnels through
an immaculate darkness
immured with
careful clippings.

Its birth into
the light bristles
with a certainty
unknown to us
who wake
into an opacity
so densely vacuous
that we subsist
on sifted memories.

Estée Arts Crenshaw is a doctoral candidate in the department of Writing & Rhetoric Studies at the University of Utah. She received her MFA in creative writing from Brigham Young University. Estée’s academic work in comparative rhetoric focuses on premodern Japanese poetry and aesthetic traditions.
