Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn – Geoff Wallin

Still wet with dew
the Earth
that draws the living from the dead

now cradles newborn fawn
plays the part of grassy bed

The sun
away since yesterday
surges through the meadow

brings a thousand shades of green
drapes the fawn in hunter’s shadow

Posed for death
the hunter stands and contemplates the deer

His heart cries out for life
as his arms drive down the spear

Eyes first opened days before
just glimpse the morning light

see not the horror
but watch
as newborn day turns into night
